Joe Geigel is a Professor and co-director of the Computer Graphics and Applied Perception Lab in the Department of Computer Science at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He received his doctorate in Computer Science in 2000 from the George Washington University in Washington D.C. His area of specialty is Computer Graphics, Virtual and Augmented Reality, and Affective Computing.
Previous to his academic career, Joe held a variety of research and development positions in industry at companies including Eastman Kodak, Bell Laboratories, Bellcore, and RCA Solid State. Just prior to joining the faculty at RIT, Joe was a Senior Web Technologist at theatre.com / BroadwayOnLine.com where he applied 3D web technologies to theatrical applications.
Joe’s research activities involve the creation of innovative projects that combine theatre, music, and live performance, with advanced technologies in motion capture, visual display, sensors, and mobile devices. His most recent collaborative efforts prior to 01X include the Virtual Theatre project (funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation), the Nostalgia Project and Exploring the Intersection of Art, Music and Technology. Each of these projects have focused on providing interdisciplinary learning experiences that foster collaboration between artists and technologists.
Joe is a long time participant of ACM SIGGRAPH and a member of the SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Pioneers.
